What are skinworms?

No, it's not a live worm in your skin, and no, blackheads aren't contagious. I know this article is long, but I promise you, when you're finished, you'll know everything there is to know about blackheads/comedones/whiteheads. Blackheads, or comedones as we call them in professional terms, are clogged sebaceous glands. They come in two varieties: the black, open ones, which are seen as small dots in the skin – also called blackheads. And then there are the small, white bumps that are closed under a thin layer of skin – also called whiteheads. It's the same material in both types, but oxygen causes the open ones to darken.

In dermatology, blackheads are considered a type of acne breakout. Therefore, blackheads are actually a very mild form of acne and are often treated as such. However, it's important to note that when we talk about blackheads/comedones, there is no inflammation involved. Therefore, antibacterial acne preparations or acne medication for inflammation will have no effect.

Regardless, they're incredibly irritating, and I hated my blackheads with a passion until I found the solution, which was right under my nose. I've put together a package specifically targeting blackheads/comedones, and even if you don't choose Raz Skincare, my guide will teach you all the tricks to get rid of your blackheads.

Why do you get ingrown hairs?
The reason these blackheads/comedones form is an overproduction of sebum in the sebaceous gland ducts.

Who gets blackheads/comedones?
Blackheads/comedones occur in almost all skin types in almost all people. However, blackheads/comedones develop more frequently and to a greater extent in people with oily skin. Oily skin is skin that produces (too) much sebum. The production of sebum in your sebaceous glands is greater during puberty and in women during menstruation. The hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is responsible for the overproduction of sebum.

Where do you get hookworms?

Blackheads/comedones can form all over the body. You can get those small whiteheads on your chest, you can certainly get them on your legs, yes, everywhere where hair also grows.

Why do you get blackheads on your nose?
The skin on your nose is thicker than the skin on your cheeks and actually has a lot of hair. Because the skin is thicker, the sebaceous glands' filling with sebum is more visible. Therefore, it's easier for an overproduction of sebum to get stuck in thicker, more stubborn skin than the skin on the cheeks. Although, cheeks can also easily get blackheads, just like the nose.

How do you remove blackheads on your nose?

Getting rid of blackheads is easier than you might think. I have performed a gentle and effective blackhead removal, ensuring they won't return.

Why do you get earworms? How do you remove earworms?
The ears are surprisingly vulnerable to blackheads because the skin inside the ear canal is covered with hundreds of tiny hair follicles and glands that produce oil and earwax. If these glands produce too much oil, your skin breaks out, and you end up with blackheads and, in the worst case, acne. Therefore, be careful when cleaning your ears. Do it as gently as possible. If you unfortunately get blackheads in your ears, they should be removed just as gently as those on your face; see and follow my effective treatment, which also ensures that the blackheads don't return.

If you remove hair, do you stop getting blackheads?
Unfortunately, blackheads aren't removed with the hair; the sebaceous gland is located next to the hair follicle, and it will still function even if the hairs aren't present. So no, even after permanent hair removal, you can still develop blackheads. Consider your nose, where the hairs are almost completely gone – a lot of blackheads/comedones form there.

Should I squeeze my pimples?

Is there anything more liberating than popping a pimple? The answer is no, it's incredibly satisfying and you can do it, you just have to follow these rules. Gently cleanse your skin, preferably with warm water, so the skin is soft and warm. Only press lightly, nothing that will burst blood vessels or anything like that. It should be a light pressure and you should only use your little fingers. And stop trying to prove how strong your little fingers are, it's just a little massaging pressure. It shouldn't be harder than the pressure it takes to not break a green grape. Be careful that your nails don't damage your skin.

IMPORTANT: Better to leave it alone than to cause harm. Therefore, follow the effective instructions I have created for you, which also ensures that your blackheads won't return.

What should I never do to blackheads/comedones?

1. Use cleaning products with alcohol.
Alcohol dehydrates the skin and actually makes the problem worse.

2. Use cleaning wipes.
The cleansing wipes I've found on the market don't clean gently and thoroughly enough, so I recommend you find another solution.

3. Hide them with heavy makeup.
Oily makeup can worsen the problem if it clogs pores; it's better to remove it at night so it's no longer a problem.

4. Deep cleansing facials.
It's a bit like peeing in your pants in freezing weather; it only helps initially. Your blackheads will definitely return. You should rather overhaul your skincare routine.

5. Masks that claim you can pull out blackheads when the mask has been on for 20 minutes.
I've tested most of them and haven't yet found one that actually worked, and if I ever did find one that did, the blackheads would just come back. You only need a proper skincare routine.

Does poor cleansing cause skinworms?
Poor cleansing of the skin is a major cause of blackheads. Another reason is that sebum cannot escape your sebaceous glands. This happens if, for example, you don't cleanse your skin properly, sufficiently, or cleanse it with overly harsh cleansers. So yes, improper cleansing of your skin can lead to many blackheads. When the skin is not cleansed or if the cleansing is too irritating, the dead skin cells will clog the pores, causing sebum to accumulate, and ta-da, you have a blackhead.

You should be careful about which cleanser you use; I would always recommend the mildest cleanser possible, and preferably one with as many vitamins and minerals as possible. I myself use the Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask every evening and morning, and I no longer have blackheads. You can see more about it... here! Of course, I can still get breakouts from time to time, but now they are easy for me to remove, and they only come up rarely.

Can I clean too hard?
Yes, if you cleanse too harshly, with excessive soap, cleansing wipes, or alcohol, you will over-cleanse your skin. You remove all the sebum, which actually causes your sebaceous glands to overproduce again. This is because your skin actually needs a lot of sebum to stay supple. If you constantly remove fat from the skin, you stimulate the skin to produce even more sebum, and thus you have worsened the problem.

Can makeup cause skinworms?
Pores can easily become clogged by overuse of the wrong makeup, too much foundation, or a lack of cleansing. It's so important to use a gentle cleanser like the Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask to ensure optimal cleansing of your skin. A good rule of thumb is that whatever you put on your face during the day, you should remove it before going to bed.

Does sunscreen cause skin worms?
Only physical sunscreens can clog your pores, not chemical ones. I know it's a confusing world to navigate. And I'd much rather you cleanse properly and use Raz Skincare A-retinoid against your blackheads than not use sunscreen at all. Don't worry, we can definitely help you get rid of your blackheads/comedones. That's why I've put together this package for you, which you can see on this page. But I'd rather you read and learn even more, so please read on.

Blackhead/comedone treatment – Blackhead/comedone treatment – you will need these products. Since I'm unsure how quickly this will work, I've put together the package with small products where I think it makes sense.

Morning Routine – Order and Usage

1. Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask
This cleansing mask should only be used as a cleanser morning and evening. If you cleanse for just 30 seconds morning and evening, you will have worn it for half an hour over the course of a month, without even realizing it. You can optionally try leaving the Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask on for 10 minutes, but no longer. It's not necessary at all, and we'd rather remove it gently and without irritating the skin.

2. Raz Skincare hh – Hyaluron
With Raz Skincare Hh, a moisturizing serum, we bind a lot of moisture to your skin, and in this way you get a lot of elasticity to your skin. When the skin is optimally moisturized, it will be more elastic, and therefore any overstimulation of the sebaceous glands will not clog the pores but simply disappear into the skin. This may not be a must-have for everyone, and therefore it is not included in the package and must be added separately.

3. Raz Skincare Face Rich Face Cream
We need to bind both moisture and fat to your skin so you don't become oily. The many active ingredients will also inhibit any irritation and bacteria that may be present in your blackheads. The cream contains SPF30, so we also protect you from harmful rays, allowing your skin to rebuild itself optimally. I expect it will be enough to use this cream in the initial phase, and that's why I've only included it for the start. However, it might be a good idea to add it to your normal routine if you're not already using a day cream with SPF.

Evening routine – sequence and usage

1. Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask
Just like in the morning, but now you also use it as a makeup remover. Yes, the Raz Skincare Cleansing Mask also removes makeup. I apply the Cleansing Mask to damp skin, and then I remove it with a soft sponge or washcloth. It doesn't get any easier than that.

2. Raz Skincare A-retinoid 5%
Use as a serum every night. A-retinoid is the newest type of vitamin A. It has proven to be even more effective and stable than both vitamin A and A-retinol. Be sure to ask your current skincare product supplier if they have also switched to retinoid – or ask them to. You'll want a concentration higher than 2% in your product to dissolve stubborn blackheads/comedones and prevent them from returning.

3. Raz Skincare Repair
Afterwards, follow your usual evening routine with a rich night cream, e.g., Raz Skincare Repair, or whatever you prefer. I know that the rich creams or Raz Skincare Repair will make your skin oily, but that's the whole point. You decide when your skin needs oil – and you'd rather it be at night than you having to oil it yourself during the day. The package contains a small 15ml Repair cream; that should be enough to cover your face for the first half month.
