Strawberry Legs, Chicken Skin, Keratosis Pilaris – why does it occur, and how do you treat it effectively?

Jordbærben, Kyllingehud, Keratosis Pilaris – hvorfor opstår det, og hvordan behandler man det effektivt? - Raz Skincare

Many experience small dark spots on their legs, bumps after shaving, or skin that never feels completely smooth – even with daily exfoliation, shaving, and moisturizing.

This is often referred to as strawberry legs, strawberry arms, or strawberry armpits.
However, behind this popular name, several different skin mechanisms are actually hidden.

At Raz Skincare, we don't just address the symptom – but the biological causes behind the problem.

What are strawberry legs?

Strawberry legs is a collective term for visible hair follicles, dark spots, uneven skin texture, and irritation around the hair follicles.

The condition is typically caused by a combination of:

  • Keratosis pilaris

  • Follicular occlusion

  • Pseudofolliculitis

  • PIH and PIE (discoloration after inflammation)

  • Incorrect shaving and skin irritation

Many mistakenly believe the problem is solely due to dry skin.
In reality, it often involves disturbed cell renewal, inflammation, and clogged hair follicles.

The 3 most common causes of strawberry legs

1. Keratosis Pilaris (hyperkeratinization)

Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin condition where keratin accumulates around the hair follicles.

Keratin is a natural structural protein in the skin, but when the skin produces too much of it, it can block the hair follicle and create:

  • small bumps

  • rough skin

  • uneven texture

  • “chicken skin” sensation

The condition is often seen on:

  • thighs

  • upper arms

  • buttocks

  • legs

2. Follicular occlusion (clogged hair follicles)

Here, there is an accumulation of:

  • sebum

  • dead skin cells

  • oxidative waste

inside the hair follicle.

When the material oxidizes upon contact with oxygen, it darkens and appears as the classic dark spots.

This is one of the most common causes of the classic "strawberry legs" appearance.

3. Pseudofolliculitis (ingrown hairs and inflammation)

When shaving, hair can grow back into the skin instead of out through the skin surface.

This causes:

  • inflammation

  • red bumps

  • irritation

  • dark marks after healing

Especially:

  • with frequent shaving

  • dull razor blades

  • dry and irritated skin

Why do common products often not work?

Many products only address one problem at a time.

Some moisturize the skin – but do not exfoliate.
Others exfoliate aggressively – but cause irritation and inflammation.

Strawberry legs require a treatment that simultaneously works on:

✔️ accumulated skin cells
✔️ clogged pores
✔️ inflammation
✔️ the skin's moisture balance

That's exactly why we developed Raz's Signature Treatment for Strawberry Legs.

Raz's Signature Treatment for Strawberry Legs and Keratosis Pilaris

🔬 The initial phase (the first 14 days)

The goal in the initial phase is to:

  • dissolve blockages

  • normalise cell renewal

  • reduce inflammation

  • improve skin texture

CP Chemical Peel 22% – 3 times weekly

An intensive acid treatment developed to work in multiple layers of the skin simultaneously.

The formula combines, among other things:

Salicylic Acid (BHA)

Fat-soluble acid that works deep in the pores and helps dissolve sebum and buildup.

Lactic Acid (AHA)

Exfoliates the skin surface and helps improve rough skin and uneven texture.

Gluconolactone (PHA)

A gentler acid with moisture-binding properties that helps sensitive skin.

Succinic Acid

Anti-inflammatory and helps with impurities and irritation around the hair follicles.

Niacinamide

Supports the skin barrier and reduces redness and irritation.

The combination allows you to work on both:

  • keratosis pilaris

  • ingrown hairs

  • clogged pores

  • uneven skin texture

at the same time.

Smoothing Body Wash – morning and evening

An exfoliating body wash developed specifically for strawberry skin.

Contains, among other things:

  • Salicin from willow

  • Fruit acids (AHA)

  • Lactic acid

It helps daily to keep hair follicles free of accumulated skin cells and reduces rough skin and dark spots.

Smoothing Body Lotion – morning and evening

A light body lotion developed for daily maintenance without heavy or occlusive greasy film.

Contains, among other things:

  • AHA acid complex

  • Lactic acid

  • Vitamin E

With daily use, it helps to:

  • keep skin smooth

  • reduce new blockages

  • support the skin's moisture balance

  • improve skin texture over time

Maintenance

Once the skin has improved, the routine is typically reduced to:

  • CP Chemical Peel 1-2 times a week as needed

  • Smoothing Body Wash once daily

  • Smoothing Body Lotion daily after washing

The most important thing is not aggressive treatment – but consistency.

The most important rule

Consistency beats intensity.

You should not scrub the skin clean.
You need to teach the skin to behave correctly.
