In this article, I will guide you through the process of identifying your skin type and share my advice so that you can achieve the best skin care for your particular skin.
Dry skin (Xerosis cutis):
If your skin feels tight, scaly, or tends to itch and crack, then you probably have a dry skin type. Dry skin occurs when your skin lacks natural oils and has difficulty retaining moisture. This can be due to genetic factors, external influences such as weather conditions or excessive use of drying products. Dry skin may also be more prevalent in older people as the skin naturally loses its ability to produce sufficient moisture.
To care for dry skin, I recommend using moisturizing products that contain emollients such as shea butter or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients help to rebuild the skin's moisture barrier and seal the moisture inside the skin. Also, use mild cleansers and avoid excessive exfoliation, as this can worsen dryness.
Oily skin (Seborrhoeic dermatitis):
If your skin feels oily, shiny and tends to have enlarged pores and blockages, then you may have an oily skin type. Oily skin is caused by an overproduction of sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts. This condition can be hereditary or influenced by hormonal changes such as puberty or menstruation.
To control oily skin, I recommend using products specially formulated to reduce sebum production and regulate the skin's oil balance. Ingredients such as salicylic acid or tea tree oil can be effective in fighting excess oil and reducing inflammation. Use a mild, non-comedogenic cleansing gel or foam to cleanse the skin and avoid heavy and oil-based moisturizers as they can clog pores.
Combination skin (Mixtura cutis): Combination skin is a combination of dry and oily skin. If you experience dryness and flaking in certain areas of your face, such as the cheeks, while you tend to be oily in the T-zone (nose, forehead and chin), then you probably have a combination skin type. This type of skin requires a balanced approach to maintain a healthy skin condition.
The best way to manage combination skin is by using products formulated to balance and hydrate the dry areas while controlling excess oil in the T-zone. Use a mild cleansing lotion or foam to cleanse the entire face and avoid over-exfoliation. Use a light, oil-free moisturizer on the dry areas and a more mattifying moisturizer or toner in the T-zone.
Normal skin (Eudermic skin): If your skin is well-balanced, neither too dry nor too oily, and has an even complexion, then you have a normal skin type. Fortunately, normal skin is less prone to skin problems and generally requires less maintenance. However, this does not mean that you can neglect to care for your skin. Even with normal skin, it's important to maintain a regular skin care routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection.
